Oskaloosa--The Lady Statesmen softball team will be slight underdogs to defend its conference crown as the Midwest Collegiate Conference Softball Preseason Poll was released today.
Penn, who is coming off a 2009 campaign in which it finished 40-18 overall (MCC best 28-4), is projected second in the league with 70 points and two first-place votes.
The league's coaches tabbed Grand View to narrowly top the Lady Statesmen as the Vikings claimed 72 points and four first-place votes.
Mount Mercy is a close third with 67 points and two first-place votes, while Waldorf is fourth with 59 points and the final first-place vote.
St. Ambrose is in the middle of the pack with 43 points, while Iowa Wesleyan (30 points), Clarke (27 points), Viterbo (21 points), and Ashford (16 points) round out the poll.
