Davenport--In a game the team had to have to keep for any real hope of a home game in the league tournament, Penn could not cool off St. Ambrose in a 77-50 loss in Midwest Collegiate Conference action Wednesday.

The Lady Statesmen (15-12, 7-6 MCC) are now one and a half games behind the Queen Bees (21-7, 9-5 MCC) for fourth place in the conference and two games back of Mount Mercy for third.

Penn scored first as Samantha Darley (Jr., Gilbert, Ariz., Mesa HS) knocked down the first of just three three-pointers for the visitors. The Lady Statesmen stayed close in the early minutes, but St. Ambrose claimed the advantage for good at 16-15 with 9:46 left in the first period.

The Lady Statesmen were still only down three at 28-25 near the end of the stanza. Unfortunately, the Queen Bees scored the final four points to lead 32-25 at the break.

The hosts added five more unanswered points directly out of intermission and led by double digits the remainder of the way. St. Ambrose shot 60.0% in the second half to guide it to a 45.9%-31.4% shooting edge.

Penn turned the ball over 24 times, compared to just 12 by the Queen Bees, accounting for a significant 30-12 disadvantage in points off turnovers.

The visitors held a 43-33 edge in rebounding, including a 16-8 margin on the offensive end, but unfortunately failed to convert that into many points (SAU won the battle of second-chance points 14-9).

Rachel Butler (Jr., Anaheim, Calif., Cerritos CC) and Carleigh Hobson (Jr., Lancaster, Calif., Antelope Valley CC) made a strong statement off the bench, scoring 19 of Penn's 25 bench points.

Butler paced Penn with 11 points and pulled down a season-high 11 rebounds for her first double-double of her Lady Statesmen career.

Hobson added eight points, while Christa Subbert (Jr., Stanton, Stanton HS) matched her total and was also strong on the glass with a career-best 13 caroms.

The night witnessed the end of a streak as Subbert finished 2-3 at the free-throw line, stopping her consecutive made free throws mark at 35. The tally breaks the old school record of 26 by Cindy McCarthy, set in the 1985-1986 season. The junior, whose streak started on January 2, is now 92-108 (85.2%) at the line this year.

Darley added seven points and a squad-high two blocks in the contest, while Nancy Chicas (Sr., San Francisco, Calif., San Mateo CC) dished out a team-high two assists. The pair tied for the team lead with three steals.
