Gabriel Green won the 55, 200, and 400-meter dash events to be named MCC Male Indoor Track Athlete of the Year
Sterling, Ill.--At least for the indoor season, Gabriel Green (Fr., Anniston, Ala., Anniston HS) can stake claim to the title of "Fastest Man in the MCC" as he helped the Statesmen track and field team to a solid finish at the Midwest Collegiate Conference Indoor Championships Saturday.

As a team, Penn placed fourth out of seven teams with 112 points. St. Ambrose dethroned Grand View as league champion with 183 points. The Vikings were second with 146.5 points.

Green was by far the best runner in the field as he won the 55, 200, and 400-meter dash events to be named MCC Male Indoor Track Athlete of the Year.

The freshman, who has already qualified for the NAIA meet in the 200, added the 55 (will be run as the 60 meters at nationals) to his qualifying resume. He inched out Iowa Wesleyan's Xavier Shields for the title in a "B" qualifying time of 6.51 seconds. Shields was just milliseconds behind at 6.51 seconds, while Green's teammate Carlos Stepter (Jr., Highland Park, Mich., Highland Park HS) also reached a qualifying time, coming in third in a time of 6.52 seconds. Both Green and Stepter will compete at nationals in the two short sprint races.

Green then blitzed everyone in the 200 group in a time of 22.46 seconds, while the next-best time was 22.71 seconds. The freshman completed his sweep with another dominating performance in the 400, finishing in a time of 50.33 seconds, while second place was 51.11 seconds. Josh Roudabush (Jr., Brooklyn, BGM HS) was sixth in the event in a time of 52.44 seconds.

All three of the Green's times broke meet records.

The Statesmen scored numerous other points on the track, headlined by a second-place finish from Jason Morad (Jr., Detroit, Mich., Oakland CC) in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:02.39.

Morad also placed fifth in the one-mile run in a team season-best time of 4:40.17, while Roudabush scored points in a second event as well, taking fifth in the 600-meter run in another team season-best time of 1:27.09.

Brandon Nicholson (Fr., Cedar Falls, Cedar Falls HS) assisted Penn's cause by placing fifth in both the 3,000-meter run (9:47.04) and the 5,000-meter run (16:47.49), while Jordan Letzring (Jr., Alta, Alta HS) gave Penn two point scorers in the 5,000 with a seventh-place showing in a time of 17:08.64.

The 4x400 and distance medley relay teams put points on the board as well. The 400 relay was second in a time of 3:31.08, while the medley squad took sixth in a time of 12:56.60.

The dynamic jumping duo of Royce Clay (Sr., Miami, Fla., Booker T. Washington HS) and Javaras Thomas (Jr., Miami, Fla., Miami Beach HS) also shone bright at the Championships, taking the top two spots in both the long and triple jump events.

Clay won the long jump in an "A" qualifying length of 23-0.75, while Thomas was second at 22-0.75. Thomas then returned the favor by winning the triple with a length of 48-2.75, while Clay was runner-up at 46-0.75. The pair will both compete at nationals in the triple jump and Clay will represent his program in the long jump. Saturday's long and triple marks easily snapped previous meet records.

The Penn women were also in action at the Championships, but with a much smaller squad, did not fare as well. The Lady Statesmen placed sixth out of seven programs with five points. Grand View defended its title with 203 points.

Katie Burnett (Jr., Mesa, Ariz., Arizona) scored points in the pole vault with a height of 7-10.5 (tied sixth), while the 4x400-meter relay team also placed sixth.

Next: The select few individuals who met qualifying standards will now travel to Johnson City, Tenn. to compete at the NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships from March 4-6.
