Oskaloosa--Christa Subbert (Jr., Stanton, Stanton HS) poured in a season-high 33 points as the Lady Statesmen basketball team cruised past Waldorf 76-63 in Midwest Collegiate Conference action Wednesday.

The win secures the first winning campaign for the program since it owned a 13-12 record during the 1993-1994 season. The Lady Statesmen (16-13, 8-7 MCC) also secured their first .500 record in MCC play.

Penn rode the coattail of Subbert all night as the junior, who now has 1,432 career points (9th place all-time), tallied 17 of the home team's 39 first-half points (Penn led 39-25 at the break).

The Warriors (10-18, 5-10 MCC), behind an impressive 26-point performance from Aubrey Draves, fell behind by as much as 22 points in the second stanza before going on a 19-6 run to cut the deficit to nine at 61-52 with 8:25 remaining.

Fortunately, Waldorf drew no closer to Penn as the Lady Statesmen completed the season sweep.

Subbert finished the night 12-of-18 from the field, including going 4-of-6 from behind the arc. She also went 6-of-7 at the free-throw line. The aggressive Lady Statesmen got to the line 23 times, making 17 of those throws, while Waldorf was just 6-of-14 at the stripe.

Penn, who won the shooting battle 43.5%-36.5%, also managed a 48-44 edge in rebounding (18-15 in second-chance points). Subbert just missed out on a double-double, matching Rachel Butler (Jr., Anaheim, Calif., Cerritos CC) and Waldorf's Rachel Hannam with a game-high nine rebounds.

The hosts also bettered the Warriors in three-pointers made (5-3), blocked shots (4-1), and steals (9-6).

Nancy Chicas (Sr., San Francisco, Calif., San Mateo CC) joined Subbert in double figures with 11 points, while Samantha Darley (Jr., Gilbert, Ariz., Mesa HS) contributed nine points and Butler concluded the evening with eight.

Darley dished out a team-best three assists, while Butler and Chandra Melaragno (Sr., Hartville, Ohio, Marlington HS) led their team with three thefts apiece.

"Obviously, Christa Subbert had a big game for us, but this was a big game for our program," Lady Statesmen Head Coach Brian Spielbauer said. "The girls did a great job tonight and throughout this year. It has been a team effort all season. I look forward to our team continuing to do great things this year and in the future."
