This winter's 17 wins by the Lady Statesmen (17-13, 9-7 MCC) are the most for the program since the 1989-1990 campaign (17-9 record). The warm fuzzies from the win must quickly depart, however, as Penn now sets its sights on the conference tournament, which begins next Thursday.
The Lady Statesmen have earned the #5 seed for the tourney and will hit the road for Davenport Thursday to face #4 seed St. Ambrose at 7 p.m. Penn was swept by the Queen Bees this year, falling 79-53 in Oskaloosa last month and 77-50 in Davenport just ten days ago.
2010 Women's Basketball MCC Tournament BracketThe visitors nearly led from start to finish, claiming the advantage for good at 6-4 on a jumper by
Nancy Chicas (Sr., San Francisco, Calif., San Mateo CC).
Penn led 31-29 at halftime and were up by as much as ten in the second half, but could never shake the pesky V-Hawks (7-23, 3-13 MCC). The host squad slowly chipped away at the double-digit margin and finally evened the score at 58-58 with 5:32 remaining and then again at 60-60 with 2:54 still on the clock.
The Lady Statesmen closed the game out strong, however, as
Christa Subbert (Jr., Stanton, Stanton HS) scored the next eight points, including a pair of trifectas, and Viterbo never got closer than seven points again.
The Penn defense limited the V-Hawks to just 31.4% from the floor, while the visiting team hit 43.1% of its shots. The Lady Statesmen also held a 43-36 edge in rebounding, but even with all of that in their favor, they still nearly succumbed because of the charity stripe. Penn was just 15-of-24 at the free-throw line, while Viterbo was more effective with more opportunities, going 25-of-32 on the afternoon.
In leading her team to the win, Subbert recorded her third double-double of the year with team highs of 23 points and 11 rebounds. The junior, who finished 9-of-22 from the field, knocked down 5-of-9 three-pointers.
Rachel Butler (Jr., Anaheim, Calif., Cerritos CC) had a very nice showing as well, scoring 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting.
Samantha Darley (Jr., Gilbert, Ariz., Mesa HS) also reached double figures with ten points, while Chicas just missed the mark with nine points.
Raven House (So., New Orleans, La., Cabrini HS) contributed six points to the cause as well.
Chicas and House led Penn with three assists, while Darley blocked a team-best two shots. Subbert and
Carleigh Hobson (Jr., Lancaster, Calif., Antelope Valley CC) finished with two steals apiece.
