Stout guided Penn with a career-high 26 points and nine rebounds as Penn (21-10) held on although nearly blew an 18-point second half lead.
The Statesmen advance to face #2 seed Viterbo in La Crosse, Wis. Friday in the tournament semifinals (tip is set for 7 p.m.). The V-Hawks, who swept Penn in the regular season, drubbed #7 seed Waldorf 87-56 to reach the next round.
In other quarterfinal action, #1 seed Grand View dumped #8 seed Iowa Wesleyan 80-59 and #4 seed Ashford defeated #5 seed St. Ambrose 79-72.
Courtesy of 51.2% shooting, Penn pulled out to a 49-38 halftime lead. The visitors continued to pour it on the second period, going up by as much as 69-51 with 11:29 left in regulation.
Unfortunately, the Mustangs (22-9) remembered they were the higher seed and were playing at home and began to cut into the deficit. By the 7:44 mark, the margin was just eight at 73-65.
The difference remained in that ballpark for the next several minutes, until Mount Mercy, still down 86-76 with 2:54 remaining, began its final push.
The Mustangs then scored on four of their next five possessions and kept Penn off the board to cut the deficit to just one point at 86-85 with nine ticks left on the clock.
Kris Miller (Sr., Belleville, Mich., Belleville HS) was fouled on the ensuing inbounds pass, and with ice in his veins, he knocked down both attempts. The senior finished 4-of-4 at the charity stripe and extended the advantage to three points.
Mount Mercy quickly pushed the ball down the court, but a buzzer-beating three-point attempt by Jake Carey was off-line (finished 1-of-9 from behind the arc) and Penn left the court victorious.
Stout, whose previous career high was 15 points two years ago, was incredibly efficient by going 12-of-15 from the field, including making his only three-point attempt and free-throw try. His nine boards were also a team best as Penn dominated the glass with a 46-30 edge, leading to a crucial and game-deciding 26-13 edge in second-chance points.
Penn actually lost the shooting battle 50.7%-48.0%, but won the turnover category 18-19, which resulted in a 26-19 advantage in points off turnovers.
The Statesmen starters controlled the game, scoring all but 12 of the team's points.
Miller finished with 21 points in addition to team highs in assists (3), blocked shots (2), and steals (5), while
Jesse DeGeest (Sr., Tracy, Twin Cedars HS) put up 16 points in the win.
Joseph Greenhouse (Sr., Marksville, La., Marksville HS), with eight points off the bench, and
Nick Coffey (Jr., Hinsdale, Ill., Hinsdale Central HS), with seven points, also had productive scoring performances.
Joel Stout (Sr., New Sharon, North Mahaska HS) added six points on the evening.
Walter Herron (So., Houston, Texas, Westfield HS) matched Miller with three assists of his own.
"I'm not sure if we would have won if we played one more minute, but we held on so that's all that matters," Statesmen Head Coach
John Henry said. "I wanted our guys to come into the game angry and play hard and they did. To win twice at Mount Mercy in one year is incredible."
"
Caleb Stout was unbelievable and without him, we would have had no chance," Henry added. "So many different players contributed to this win, however and I am very happy for them. I am especially happy for the seniors because they get one more game."
