Tucson, Ariz.--The Lady Statesmen softball team has dominated on both ends to start its 2010 season with a perfect 4-0 record on its spring break trip in Arizona.

Penn (4-0) opened its season Monday with an 8-1 win over St. John Fisher (N.Y.) and a 4-1 victory over Maryville (Mo.). On Tuesday, the Lady Statesmen swept Siena Heights (Mich.) 12-1 and 2-1.

William Penn 8, St. John Fisher (N.Y.) 1

Penn, who has already hit five home runs in its first four contests, knocked two offerings out of the park against St. John Fisher.

The Lady Statesmen got off to a great start with four runs in the first inning, including a two-run single by Leah Mork (Sr., DeWitt, North Iowa Area CC). The senior finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs.

Kara Atkins (So., Burlington, Burlington HS) paced the offensive effort by going 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Andrea Rensberger (Jr., Sioux City, Sioux City North HS) also had a pair of hits (2-for-2). Penn owned a 13-7 edge in hits against St. John Fisher.

Tyanna Helton (Sr., Santa Rosa, Calif., Palomar CC), already the program's career leader in home runs, put another over the fence, while Hailey Dreyer (Sr., Twin Lakes, Wis., Dubuque) hit her first roundtripper in the navy blue and gold as well. Helton scored twice in the win.

Matching a strong freshman campaign, Hannah Lugar (So., Kalona, Mid-Prairie HS) began her sophomore season shutting down the opposing batters. The sophomore threw a complete game, allowing one earned run on seven hits. She struck out a career-best ten against just one walk.

William Penn 4, Maryville (Mo.) 1

The Lady Statesmen pulled out to a 2-0 lead before Marvyille could get on the board with one in the top of the fifth. Penn then put the contest out of reach with two more runs in the bottom half of the inning.

Four different players finished the game going 2-for-3 at the plate. One of those players, Ashley Stream (So., Chariton, Chariton HS), scored a game-high three runs, while Helton, also 2-for-3, knocked in two runs.

Molly Miller (Fr., Kalona, Mid-Prairie HS) and Krystina Lorah (Jr., Moreno Valley, Calif., Moreno Valley HS) were also 2-for-3 in the victory. Penn outhit Maryville 10-3.

Monica Villarreal (Fr., Oceanside, Calif., Carlsbad HS) was impressive in her collegiate debut as she went the distance, allowing just one run (unearned) on three hits. She struck out ten with only one base on balls.

William Penn 12, Siena Heights (Mich.) 1

The Lady Statesmen offense exploded for its best performance yet in Tuesday's first game versus Siena Heights.

Nine different players had a hit as Penn recorded 17 base knocks. Helton topped the effort by going 4-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs.

Fellow senior Mork also had a big showing with a 3-for-5 day, posting three RBIs and three runs scored.

Stream (2-for-5, two runs), Lorah (2-for-2, two RBIs and two runs), and Khyia Lewis (So., Ottumwa, Ottumwa HS) (2-for-4, three RBIs) contributed as well.

Lewis, Lorah, and Mork all left the park for their first home runs of the year. It is Lewis' first collegiate roundtripper.

The offensive prowess was more than enough for Lugar, who improved to 2-0 on the season. The sophomore gave up just one run (earned) on five hits in another complete game. She struck out nine against one walk.

William Penn 2, Siena Heights (Mich.) 1

The tightest game of the season once again witnessed the Lady Statesmen finding success at the plate (ten hits), but unfortunately they missed on several golden opportunities. Penn left nine on base, while Siena Heights struggled to bring baserunners home as well, leaving eight on base.

Lewis doubled home Brittany Labbe (Fr., Northridge, Calif., Chaminade HS) for the game's first run in the first inning.

The Lady Statesmen added to their lead in the fifth as Labbe scored the other run on a groundout by Christine Gamble (So., Pahrump, Nev., Pahrump Valley HS). Labbe led the offensive charge by going 3-for-4, while Atkins and Cassie Ward (Jr., San Dimas, Calif., Citrus CC) were both 2-for-3.

Lauryn Northup (Jr., Sigourney, Sigourney HS) tossed a solid 5 1/3 innings inside the circle, but had to be replaced by Villarreal, who picked up her first collegiate save.

Northup (1-0) allowed just one run (earned) on seven hits, striking out two batters with two walks. Villarreal did not allow a batter to reach base in her 1 2/3 innings of work. The freshman struck out three to preserve the victory.

Next: Penn continues its spring break trip Wednesday by facing Alvernia (Pa.) at 10 a.m. and Neumann (Pa.) at noon (times are CST).
