Burnett demolished her own school record in the 3,000-meter race walk with a blistering time of 14:35.29. Her second-place finish betters her pair of fifth-place awards from 2009. Burnett's previous school record was 15:45.23 a year ago.
Jessica Ching of Lindenwood (Mo.) held off Burnett with a time of 14:25.38 as the top five finishers, including defending national champion Tina Peters of Goshen (Ind.), all had faster times than Peters' championship walk from a year ago (14:58.96).
With her three All-American finishes, Burnett now matches Arlene Truss (1994-1996) as the most decorated Lady Statesmen track and field athlete of all-time. Truss was a three-time All-American in the shot put, including winning the only national championship for a Penn female trackster in 1994.
Male sprinters
Gabriel Green (Fr., Anniston, Ala., Anniston HS) and
Carlos Stepter (Jr., Highland Park, Mich., Highland Park HS) and jumper
Royce Clay (Sr., Miami, Fla., Booker T. Washington HS) were also in competition Friday.
Unfortunately, the trio did not fare as well as Burnett against the NAIA's elite.
Green ran in both the 60 and 200-meter dash events, but came up short of reaching the next round in both. The freshman just missed advancing to the finals in the 200 by placing tenth out of 23 with a season-best time of 21.87 seconds, just .03 seconds off the finals-qualifying pace.
His 60 time was also a season best (tied), finishing 18th out of 33 runners in a time of 6.98 seconds.
Stepter, who qualified in both runs, chose to only compete in the 60 and placed 25th in a time of 7.05 seconds.
Clay landed the first of his three long jumps at a distance of 21-0.5. He then failed to improve on that mark with back-to-back fouls. He finished the event 26th out of 30 competitors.
Next: Clay and
Javaras Thomas (Jr., Miami, Fla., Miami Beach HS) will hit the pit Saturday in the triple jump to conclude the 2010 indoor nationals for Penn.
