On Friday, the Lady Statesmen (11-0) defeated Siena Heights (Mich.) 9-1 (6 innings) and Great Falls (Mont.) 2-0.
On Saturday, Penn downed Calumet-St. Joseph (Ind.) 10-1 (5 innings), Great Falls 8-4, and Aquinas (Mich.) 12-1.
Penn outscored its spring break opposition 89-14. The program's previous best start was 7-0 back in 2002.
William Penn 9, Siena Heights (Mich.) 1Penn started slow against Siena Heights, actually trailing 1-0 after three and a half innings. The Lady Statesmen managed to knot the contest at 1-1 in the bottom half of the frame on a solo home run by
Kara Atkins (So., Burlington, Burlington HS), her first roundtripper of the campaign.
Three more home runs came in a four-run fifth inning as
Ashley Stream (So., Chariton, Chariton HS),
Tyanna Helton (Sr., Santa Rosa, Calif., Palomar CC), and
Khyia Lewis (So., Ottumwa, Ottumwa HS) all left the park. It is the second time in program history Penn has hit three home runs in a single inning, also doing so against Viterbo (Wis.) on April 28, 2003.
The Lady Statesmen added four more runs in the next inning to cap the victory. Helton highlighted the inning with a two-run single as she and Lewis topped the team by going 3-for-4 at the plate. Helton tallied three RBIs, while Lewis had two.
Stream was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while
Molly Miller (Fr., Kalona, Mid-Prairie HS) was also 2-for-4.
Krystina Lorah (Jr., Moreno Valley, Calif., Moreno Valley HS) scored twice in the win as well.
Hannah Lugar (So., Kalona, Mid-Prairie HS), who is now 5-0 on the year, had a powerful outing in the circle, allowing just one run (earned) on four hits. She struck out ten with no walks.
William Penn 2, Great Falls (Mont.) 0In the lone pitching duel of the week,
Monica Villarreal (Fr., Oceanside, Calif., Carlsbad HS) went head-to-head against a trio of Great Falls' pitchers and came out on top.
The freshman, who has yet to allow a single earned run in 28 2/3 innings (just two unearned runs), gave up only three hits in the shutout. Villarreal (4-0) struck out seven with two walks.
Helton put the Lady Statesmen on the board in the third with a solo shot to make it 1-0.
Andrea Rensberger (Jr., Sioux City, Sioux City North HS) extended the advantage to 2-0 in the sixth when she crossed home plate on a wild pitch.
Stream led Penn with a 2-for-3 performance as the team was limited to a season-low five hits.
William Penn 10, Calumet-St. Joseph (Ind.) 1The offense was back in full force in Saturday's first game as the Lady Statesmen recorded 13 base knocks and scored all ten of their runs in the first and third innings.
Leah Mork (Sr., DeWitt, North Iowa Area CC) had the big hit of the first frame with a two-run single, one of her two hits (2-for-3, two RBIs).
Helton and
Brittany Labbe (Fr., Northridge, Calif., Chaminade HS) both tallied two-run singles in the third to put the game out of reach. Helton finished 3-for-3 with two RBIs, while Atkins was 2-for-3 in the win. Stream scored twice and Labbe had two RBIs. All nine position starters scored at least one run against Calumet-St. Joseph.
Lauryn Northup (Jr., Sigourney, Sigourney HS) remained perfect at 2-0 by allowing just one run (earned) on four hits. She posted four strikeouts against one base on balls.
William Penn 8, Great Falls (Mont.) 4Down 2-0 after three innings, the Lady Statesmen rallied with three runs in the top of the fourth.
Atkins, Rensberger, and
Hailey Dreyer (Sr., Twin Lakes, Wis., Dubuque) all recorded RBIs in that frame, but Great Falls responded for one run to tie the game at 3-3 in the bottom half.
Both teams scored once in the sixth (Labbe RBI single), but Penn broke the tie for good in the final frame with four runs. Atkins had the big hit with a two-run double.
Helton paced the squad by finishing 3-for-3, while Rensberger also picked up three baseknocks (3-for-4, two RBIs).
Atkins was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs and Labbe matched her with a 2-for-4 showing. Miller had two hits in three at-bats and scored twice in the victory.
Lugar was not as strong as the previous day, but still walked away victorious. The sophomore allowed four runs (all earned) on nine hits. She struck out three batters with one walk.
Villarreal relieved her for the final three outs to notch her second save of 2010. She put her opponents down in order, including one strikeout.
William Penn 12, Aquinas (Mich.) 1
An eight-run seventh inning led to the conclusion of a perfect week for Penn. Helton left the park one more time, her team-leading third roundtripper of the year, to pace the effort by going 2-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs.
Stream, Miller, Lorah, Dreyer, and Rensberger also had two hits apiece as Penn recorded a total of 14 baseknocks. Miller scored a team-best three runs, while Lorah had two RBIs.
Stream and Rensberger joined Helton by scoring twice as well.
Villarreal ended the trip with one more masterful outing. The freshman allowed one unearned run on four hits, while striking out ten batters. Batters are hitting a meager .115 against her this spring.
Helton led the offensive attack in Arizona with a .649 batting average, including nine doubles, three home runs, 18 RBIs, and 12 runs scored. She currently posts a 1.135 slugging percentage.
