Penn tied for seventh out of 17 teams with a final score of 618 (318-300). The tournament was contested at the Salina Elks Golf Course (par 71, 5,991 yards) Monday and the Turkey Creek Golf Course (par 70, 6,282 yards) Tuesday. The Statesmen were one spot ahead of Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.), who received one vote nationally.
Host Bethany posted a two-day tally of 578 (302-276) to sneak past Southwestern (Kan.) and its score of 580 (299-281) for the team title. Southwestern is unofficially 31st in the most recent NAIA poll.
Southwestern's Jared Paul won the individual title with a score of one-over 142 (74-68), defeating teammate Kenneth Wright (72-70) in a playoff. A total of 91 collegiate golfers were on the links during the two-day event.
Brent Lurie (Fr., Johannesburg, South Africa, Beaulieu College) paced the Statesmen effort by tying for 16th with a score of 152, including an even par round of 70 the second day (82 on Monday).
The score of 70 is the lowest for any Penn player this year.
Cam Armitage (Jr., Delta, B.C., North Delta HS) also shot even par (71) at Otter Creek GC in Ankeny in September.
Seb Stobart (So., Harare, Zimbabwe, St. Georges College) and
Mattias Carlsson (Fr., Uddevalla, Sweden, Agnebergskolan HS) were next for Penn, tying for 23rd with identical 78-75 performances to finish at 153.
Armitage, with a tally of 162 (80-82) to tie for 55th, and
Adriaan de Villiers (Fr., Akasia, South Africa, Akasia HS), with a tally of 166 (86-80) to tie for 65th, rounded out the varsity scoring.
Geoff Dammann (Fr., Wyoming, Midland HS) also made the trip as an individual and finished in a tie for 77th at 175 (87-88).
Next: Penn is off nearly three weeks before traveling to Pella on March 26-27 to compete in the Central Dutch Classic at the Bos Landen Golf Resort.
