Oskaloosa--Statesmen triple jumper
Javaras Thomas (Jr., Miami, Fla., Miami Beach HS) and Lady Statesmen race walker
Katie Burnett (Jr., Mesa, Ariz., Arizona) both claimed the league's track and field weekly honors as the Midwest Collegiate Conference announced its Players of the Week.
Thomas earned his first Male Field Athlete of the Week honor of the year (second of his career), while Burnett also earned her first Female Track Athlete of the Week honor of the spring (third of her career).
Thomas received the honor for his fourth-place showing in the triple jump at last week's NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships. The junior broke his own school record with a mark of 50-11.5 to become just the second male track and field All-American in Penn history.
Thomas shared the award with Steven Hughes of Grand View who placed fifth in the heptathlon.
In becoming just the second female track and field athlete to win three All-American awards, Burnett improved on a pair of fifth-place finishes from last year to take second in the 3,000-meter race walk at nationals. Like Thomas, the junior also broke her own school record with a time of 14:35.29.
Burnett shared the honor with Obsie Birru of Grand View who placed second in the 5,000-meter run.
The honors are the third and fourth for the Penn track and field programs this year.
