The #21-ranked Lady Statesmen (11-2) lost to Rogers State (Okla.) 7-1 and to host Evangel 4-0. The team was scheduled to play on Saturday, but the contests were cancelled due to poor weather conditions.
The weekend was slated as a great measuring tool for Penn as Evangel, who is picked to win the Heart of America Conference, is unofficially 26th in the NAIA and Rogers State is 39th.
The Lady Statesmen were unable to get much of anything going Friday, tallying just four hits against Rogers State. Penn also struggled on defense in the opening game, allowing ten hits and committing four errors.
Ashley Stream (So., Chariton, Chariton HS),
Krystina Lorah (Jr., Moreno Valley, Calif., Moreno Valley HS),
Leah Mork (Sr., DeWitt, North Iowa Area CC), and
Kara Atkins (So., Burlington, Burlington HS) all had one hit each in the loss.
After falling behind 5-0 entering the bottom of the fourth inning, Penn scored its lone run of the day when Atkins drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home pinchrunner
Whitney Reber (So., Ottumwa, Ottumwa HS), who was on the basepaths for
Tyanna Helton (Sr., Santa Rosa, Calif., Palomar CC).
Monica Villarreal (Fr., Oceanside, Calif., Carlsbad HS) took the loss to fall to 4-1 in her freshman campaign. She allowed seven runs (all earned) on seven hits, while striking out three.
The Lady Statesmen fared no better in the day's second contest as they were held without a hit in a game that was lost in the field. All four of Evangel's runs were unearned as
Hannah Lugar (So., Kalona, Mid-Prairie HS) was saddled with the loss to drop her record to 5-1. The sophomore gave up the four runs on five hits with three strikeouts and one walk.
Penn, who owned a .976 fielding mark with only seven mistakes entering the day, committed five fielding errors in the loss.
Stream, Atkins, and
Danielle Bennett (Fr., Plattsburg, Mo., Clinton County RIII HS) all drew one walk each in the matchup.
