Indianola--Although it was the warmest day of the year thus far, the Statesmen golf team still fought against strong winds and a very slow moving field at the Simpson Spring Invitational Tuesday.

Penn tied for seventh out of 16 teams with tally of 326 at the par-71 Indianola Country Club (6,369 yards).

Grand View Red claimed the tourney crown with a 304, while Wartburg was second at 310.

Justin Livingston of Grand View Red won the title with an even par score of 71. The field of 100 collegiate golfers took nearly seven hours to complete the round.

Seb Stobart (So., Harare, Zimbabwe, St. Georges College) highlighted Penn's day with a team-best 74 to tie for fifth overall.

Cam Armitage (Jr., Delta, B.C., North Delta HS) and Seth Vernon (Jr., Knoxville, Knoxville HS) were next for the Statesmen, tying for 30th with scores of 82.

Brent Lurie (Fr., Johannesburg, South Africa, Beaulieu College) rounded out the varsity scoring with an 88 to tie for 66th.

As aforementioned, the wind played a major role in the day's scoring with Penn having 22 less strokes on the more heavily-wooded back nine than the open front nine.

Geoff Dammann (Fr., Wyoming, Midland HS) led a group of nine Statesmen junior varsity players with a score of 78 to tie for 12th overall.

Next: Penn travels to Rhodes next Monday and Tuesday to compete in the Grand View Viking Classic at the Harvester Golf Course.
