Pella--Katie Burnett (Jr., Mesa, Ariz., Arizona) and
Javaras Thomas (Jr., Miami, Fla., Miami Beach HS) continued their strong 2010 campaigns as a small contingent represented the Penn track and field teams at the Central Invitational Saturday.
The lone Lady Statesmen at the Invitational, Burnett won the javelin event with an NAIA ‘B' standard throw of 127-11, surpassing all other competitors by over 13 feet.
Burnett has also qualified for the 3,000-meter race walk event with a 5,000-meter time of 27:25 at the Goshen Maple Leaf Invitational on March 27.
On Saturday, she also tied for eighth in the high jump at 4-7.75.
Thomas dominated his two events, easily outdistancing the fields in the long jump and triple jump. The junior improved on his ‘A' standard in the triple with a mark of 48-3.5, but more importantly qualified in the long jump with a ‘B' mark of 23-3.25.
Thomas beat all other jumpers by more than two feet in the long jump and nearly five feet in the triple jump.
Josh Roudabush (Jr., Brooklyn, BGM HS) and Heath Nichols (Sr., State Center, West Marshall HS) were also in action Saturday.
Roudabush finished eighth in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 1:00.21, while Nichols was involved in three different events. The senior was sixth in the hammer (138-8), seventh in the javelin (133-4), and 13th in the discus (109-6).
Next: Penn travels to Des Moines Saturday to compete in the Jim Duncan Invitational.
