The Statesmen took second out of six squads with a two-day tally of 608 (308-300) at The Preserve Golf Course, a par-72, 6,987-yard course.
Graceland, who trailed Penn by one stroke entering the final day, overtook the Statesmen to win the team crown by ten strokes with a final score of 598 (309-289).
Stobart won medalist honors by seven strokes as he carded a score of three-under 141 (71-70). His two rounds under par in a single tournament are the first for Penn since joining the NAIA in 2001-2002.
He is the first Statesmen player to win an outright tournament title since Cole Reiman won the Midwest Collegiate Conference Championships on April 19-20, 2008.
Unfortunately, his score alone could not lift Penn to the team title.
Mattias Carlsson (Fr., Uddevalla, Sweden, Agnebergskolan HS) was next for the squad as he also finished in the top ten (T-8th) with a score of 153 (77-76).
Geoff Dammann (Fr., Wyoming, Midland HS) was 14th overall at 157 (78-79), while
Brent Lurie (Fr., Johannesburg, South Africa, Beaulieu College) placed 15th at 158 (83-75).
Seth Vernon (Jr., Knoxville, Knoxville HS) concluded the varsity scoring, tying for 20th at 162 (82-80).
Penn's second team, the Gold team, was in action as well and
Adriaan de Villiers (Fr., Akasia, South Africa, Akasia HS) led that fivesome to a tie for fifth in the team standings at 658 (343-315). The freshman tied Carlsson for eighth at 153 (80-73).
Ian Minder (So., Muscatine, Muscatine HS) was 23rd at 164 (86-78), while
Cory Sheeley (Jr., Oskaloosa, Oskaloosa HS) was 24th at 169 (88-81).
Tony Keller (Fr., Union, BCLUW HS), in 27th place at 175 (89-86), and
Travis Iverson (Jr., Royal City, Wash., Royal HS), in 30th place at 179 (96-83), also competed for the Gold team.
Next: Penn travels to Ankeny Friday and Saturday for the MCC Championships held at Otter Creek Golf Course. The team champion of the 54-hole event automatically qualifies for the 59th Annual NAIA Men's Golf National Championships on May 18-21 at the TPC at Deere Run in Silvis, Ill.
