The Lady Statesmen (28-9) are now winners of seven straight games.
Penn put up its first runs of the afternoon in the third frame, highlighted by a two-run double by
Krystina Lorah (Jr., Moreno Valley, Calif., Moreno Valley HS) that scored
Molly Miller (Fr., Kalona, Mid-Prairie HS) and
Tyanna Helton (Sr., Santa Rosa, Calif., Palomar CC).
Another run was added in the fourth on a double by Miller to plate
Ashley Stream (So., Chariton, Chariton HS), while the scoring concluded in the sixth as Stream came around again, this time on a single by Lorah.
The junior paced the effort at the plate by going 2-for-4 with three RBIs, while
Andrea Rensberger (Jr., Sioux City, Sioux City North HS) was 2-for-3. Penn owned a 7-2 advantage in hits.
Monica Villarreal (Fr., Oceanside, Calif, Carlsbad HS) had a few control problems early, but nothing that would have prevented her from improving to 13-4 this spring. The freshman allowed two hits in the shutout, striking out five with three walks.
After being no-hit through the first three frames of the second game, Penn finally figured out Charger pitcher Reagon Anthony and scored the first run in the bottom of the fourth.
Kara Atkins (So., Burlington, Burlington HS) did the damage with a single that scored
Khyia Lewis (So., Ottumwa, Ottumwa HS).
The floodgates officially opened in the fifth, however, when Penn started the inning with six baseknocks in a row (four singles, two doubles). Helton recorded a two-run double and
Leah Mork (Sr., DeWitt, North Iowa Area CC) added a two-run single, while Stream's single to bring in
Hailey Dreyer (Sr., Twin Lakes, Wis., Dubuque) ended the contest courtesy of the eight-run mercy rule. The Lady Statesmen posted eight of their 11 total hits in that frame.
Helton was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Stream was 2-for-4. All nine starters tallied a hit, while Lewis scored a team-best two runs. Mork also finished with two RBIs.
Hannah Lugar (So., Kalona, Mid-Prairie HS) matched Villarreal at 13-4 as she gave up four hits in the shutout. The sophomore sent five back to the dugout on strikeouts with one walk.
