Oskaloosa--Monica Villarreal (Fr., Oceanside, Calif, Carlsbad HS) had an outstanding week to help the Penn softball team extend its winning streak and for her efforts she was named Midwest Collegiate Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week announced by the league office Monday.

Villarreal collected her first career league honor as the Lady Statesmen (30-9, 8-4 MCC) went 7-0 last week to run their winning streak to nine.

The freshman was nearly untouchable during the stretch, going 4-0 with a 0.52 Earned Run Average in 27 innings of work. She gave up just two runs (both earned) on 12 hits, while striking out 26 with seven walks. Opponents hit only .132 against her.

Her best outing by far was on Friday when she allowed only one hit in a shutout of Midland Lutheran (Neb.). She struck out six and walked one.

For the year, Villarreal is 14-4 with team bests in wins (tied), ERA (1.32), innings pitched (122 1/3), complete games (18), shutouts (5), strikeouts (132), and opponent batting average (.166). She has also recorded two saves on the season.

The weekly award is the first for the softball program this spring.
