Grinnell--Although no names were added to the national qualifier list, it was still a productive day for the Penn track and field teams as they participated in the Dick Young Invitational hosted by Grinnell Saturday.

The Statesmen placed fourth out of 18 teams with 61 points. Nebraska Wesleyan blew away the field with 192 points, while Iowa Central CC was second with 79 points.

On the women's side, the Lady Statesmen placed tenth out of 16 teams with Nebraska Wesleyan again winning the crown with 210 points. Simpson earned runner-up honors with 126 points.

Gabriel Green (Fr., Anniston, Ala., Anniston HS) and Javaras Thomas (Jr., Miami, Fla., Miami Beach HS) were event winners on the men's team, while Katie Burnett (Jr., Mesa, Ariz., Arizona) notched a title for the women.

Green was the lone runner in the 400-meter dash to break the 50-second mark, winning the title with a time of 49.67 seconds.

Thomas outdistanced his competitors, including teammate Royce Clay (Sr., Miami, Fla., Booker T. Washington HS), with a triple jump mark of 47-5.25. Clay was second at 47-1.75.

Burnett won the javelin event with a toss of 127-0.

Green also had a third-place showing in the 100-meter dash in a time of 10.87 seconds, while Carlos Stepter (Jr., Highland Park, Mich., Highland Park HS) was fourth in the same time of 10.87 seconds.

Stepter had a top-five finish in the 200-meter dash as well with a time of 22.52 seconds, while Thomas was another multiple placer, taking third in the long jump at 22-11.25.

The Statesmen relay teams also performed well at the Invitational. The 4x100-meter squad was third with a time of 43.20 seconds and the 4x400 team was eighth at 3:30.53.

Josh Cohen (Jr., Edgewater, Fla., New Smyrna HS) guided the throwing crew with a seventh-place performance in the javelin at 151-7.

Ever the multi-eventer, Burnett also recorded top-ten placings in the triple jump (7th, 30-3.75), high jump (9th, 4-9), and pole vault (7th, 7-6).

Englene Richard (Fr., Dallas, Texas, Lancaster HS) joined Burnett in the triple jump and was sixth with the same mark of 30-3.75.

Next: Penn will participate in two competitions next week as most athletes will be at the Kip Janvrin Open in Indianola on Thursday and Friday, while a select few will face off against some of the best in the nation at the Drake Relays in Des Moines from Thursday through Saturday.
