Hannah Lugar earned her first collegiate no-hitter in the nightcap
Oskaloosa--Nearly a year to the date since the last such performance, Hannah Lugar (So., Kalona, Mid-Prairie HS) tossed a no-hitter to lead the Penn softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Iowa Wesleyan in Midwest Collegiate Conference play Sunday.

The Lady Statesmen (35-10, 11-5 MCC), winners of four in a row, won by scores of 12-1 (5 innings) and 6-0.

Lugar's first career no-hitter in the nightcap is the first for Penn since Allysa Fligg accomplished the feat on April 20, 2009, also against the Tigers, who are now 16-28 (6-9 MCC).

The sophomore (16-5) allowed only three batters to reach base, including a walk in the second frame and errors by Penn in the fifth and seventh innings. Lugar struck out three in the win.

The home team scored three runs in the second, highlighted by RBI singles by Andrea Rensberger (Jr., Sioux City, Sioux City North HS), Ashley Stream (So., Chariton, Chariton HS), and Molly Miller (Fr., Kalona, Mid-Prairie HS).

Three more runs were added in the fifth, including a solo home run by Tyanna Helton (Sr., Santa Rosa, Calif., Palomar CC), her second of the day and tenth of the year. Leah Mork (Sr., DeWitt, North Iowa Area CC) tallied a two-run single as well.

In outhitting their opponent 11-0, Helton and Hailey Dreyer (Sr., Twin Lakes, Wis., Dubuque) led the Lady Statesmen with 2-for-3 showings. Khyia Lewis (So., Ottumwa, Ottumwa HS) crossed home plate twice, while Mork had two RBIs.

Penn trailed 1-0 after the first inning of the opener, but the deficit did not stand long as the Lady Statesmen responded for 12 unanswered runs to taste victory.

The three second-inning runs included RBI doubles by Mork and Lewis, while the five-run third was topped by a two-run single from Kara Atkins (So., Burlington, Burlington HS).

Helton pounded her other roundtripper in the fourth inning as her team owned a 14-3 edge in hits. The hosts also took advantage of four Iowa Wesleyan errors.

Mork, one of three seniors playing in their final regular season home games, was a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs, while Helton, Lewis, and Atkins were all 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Lewis and Atkins also drove home a pair of runs.

Krystina Lorah (Jr., Moreno Valley, Calif., Moreno Valley HS) contributed two runs in the victory as well, while Rensberger had hits in both of her at-bats.

Monica Villarreal (Fr., Oceanside, Calif, Carlsbad HS) cruised to the win, allowing one run (earned) on three hits. She struck out seven (no walks) to build her record to 17-4.
