Oskaloosa--Hannah Lugar (So., Kalona, Mid-Prairie HS) tossed a dandy and the Penn softball team took advantage of fielding mistakes by Ashford in winning 2-0 in the Midwest Collegiate Conference First Round Tournament Saturday.

The Lady Statesmen (41-11), who entered this weekend's double-elimination three-team pod tournament as the #2 seed, first watched as #8 seed Ashford slipped by #5 seed St. Ambrose 2-0 to open the day.

After the Saints fell to Penn, they concluded their day and their 2010 season with another 2-0 loss to St. Ambrose. Ashford ends its year at 15-32, while the Queen Bees are now 18-19 and will meet the Lady Statesmen at noon on Sunday in the championship game. If St. Ambrose wins that contest, the teams will meet again for the ‘If Necessary' game.

Khyia Lewis (So., Ottumwa, Ottumwa HS) led off the bottom of the first with a double and then scored on an error by the Saints' right fielder to put her team up 1-0.

Penn, who outhit its opponent 4-2, recorded its second run in the fourth when Leah Mork (Sr., DeWitt, North Iowa Area CC) crossed home plate on an error by Ashford's third baseman. The Saints finished with three errors (Penn had one).

Hailey Dreyer (Sr., Twin Lakes, Wis., Dubuque), Krystina Lorah (Jr., Moreno Valley, Calif., Moreno Valley HS), and Andrea Rensberger (Jr., Sioux City, Sioux City North HS) matched Lewis with one hit apiece.

The story of the game, however, was the masterful work by Lugar, who improved to 20-5 in her two-hit shutout. The sophomore struck out four with one walk. Only one Ashford batter reached second base in the win.
