Oskaloosa--William Penn University co-men's golf coach
Wade Steinlage has announced the signing of Viktor Heurlin to a letter of intent to attend the University in the fall and compete for the men's golf program.
Heurlin, the son of Marcos Rojas and Viktoria Heurlin, is a native of Stockholm, Sweden and graduated from Frans Schartau High School in 2007.
Although he first picked up clubs at the young age of four, Heurlin took several years off as a youth and did not return to the game until 2006 and did not play competitively until 2007. Since then, he has been steadily improving, placing in the top five in four Swedish Junior Tour tournaments and scoring his first round under par in 2008.
Currently a member of the club team at Osterakers Golf Club, he was also a junior team member from 2007-2009.
A very accomplished soccer player as well, Heurlin played until he was 18 years old, competing for several teams in the Swedish National Youth League. He was captain of his high school team and played in two national championships.
"Viktor is the type of player that we are striving to recruit here," Steinlage said. "He has a great head on his shoulders and his work ethic, on and off the course, will be extraordinary. The fact that he, like so many high school graduates from Sweden, took a couple years off to enter the workforce and make a wise decision about his career choice says a lot about the maturity he will bring to the team."
"Viktor is getting better every day and his potential is boundless," Steinlage added. "I feel he will make a major impact on our program."
Penn finished fourth at this spring's Midwest Collegiate Conference Championships.
