Oskaloosa--William Penn University co-men's golf coach Wade Steinlage has announced the signing of Rutger van Brouwershaven to a letter of intent to attend the University in the fall and compete for the men's golf program.

van Brouwershaven, the son of Koos-Jan van Brouwershaven and Nicolette van Brouwershaven-Paddenburg, is a native of Johannesburg, South Africa, and graduated from American International School of Johannesburg in 2009.

The current owner of a +1.0 handicap (one stroke better than scratch) from the South African Golf Association, he has served as junior captain of the Dainfern Country Club and led the team to a fifth-place showing at the Powerade Interclub Challenge, which includes the top 15 junior teams from the Central Gaunteng area.

A pupil of former PGA player Gavin Levenson, who is the top-ranked coach in South Africa by PGA of South Africa, van Brouwershaven placed in the top ten in six of his first nine tournaments a year ago.

van Brouwershaven is talented off the course as well, playing four years of soccer and two years each of volleyball and basketball.

A member of six Model United Nation Conferences around the world, he spent nearly 150 hours in the CAS program (Creativity, Activity, and Service) during his junior and senior years. van Brouwershaven has also been active in the visual arts as an NBA Basketball without Borders photographer.

"When I first heard about Rutger, I was immediately impressed by his skill on the course, but there is so much more to him than golf," Steinlage said. "He has the skills to be successful in so many things in life and I am grateful for the opportunity to have him join our team. He joins a growing list of great players that we have had from South Africa in recent years and he has the ability to be a tremendous student-athlete at William Penn."

Penn finished fourth at this spring's Midwest Collegiate Conference Championships.
