Oskaloosa--Long-time William Penn baseball coach
Mike Laird has been named the Midwest Collegiate Conference recipient of the NAIA's Coach of Character award, announced by the national office.
After being nominated by his University, Laird was selected by the MCC's committee as its Coach of Character for his dedication to the program's five values, which include respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership, and sportsmanship.
Laird, who recently concluded his 28th season as head coach of the Statesmen baseball program, owns an 809-369-3 (.686 winning pct.) career record. His teams have won nine league crowns and have participated in 21 national postseason tournaments.
It is the third time Penn has claimed the Coach of Character award. Women's basketball coach Brian Spielbuaer garnered the Region VII honor in 2006, while softball coach Mike Christner earned the regional award in 2007.
