Oskaloosa--William Penn University co-men's golf coach
Wade Steinlage has announced the signings of two individuals to National Letters of Intent to attend the University in the fall and compete for the men's golf program.
Sheldon Gryp, the son of Jeff and Shelly Gryp, is a native of Victor and recently graduated from HLV HS.
A four-year varsity letterwinner on the links, Gryp earned four all-conference awards throughout high school, including being a first-team recipient as a senior.
As a junior, he was meet medalist five times and helped his team to the conference title and a state tournament berth.
This spring, Gryp continued to improve, earning Second-Team All-State laurels. A four-time medalist, including winning the Waverly Invitational and the sectional tournament, he again paced his team to a conference crown.
A four-sport athlete, Gryp also participated in football, basketball, and baseball all four years of high school.
"Sheldon is one of those great recruiting surprises," Steinlage said. "He actually found us and we are extremely fortunate. He is a real diamond in the rough and now that he will be solely concentrating on golf, I think he will have a great collegiate career. I would also like to give special thanks to HLV golf coach and William Penn alum Zach Tremmel for assisting with the recruitment of Sheldon."
Dylan Detweiler, the son of Mike and Nancy Detweiler, is a native of Keota and graduated from Keota in 2009.
Also a four-year letterwinner, Detweiler earned first-team all-conference honors as a junior and was a second-team pick as a senior.
As a junior, he medaled in three meets, was conference runner-up, and qualified for districts. During his senior year, Detweiler was a six-time meet medalist.
Detweiler was involved in football, basketball, and baseball as well.
An Honor Roll student throughout high school, Detweiler was a member of the National Honor Society.
"Dylan is a great kid to be around and will be a nice fit for our program," Steinlage said. "He has been away from competitive golf for over a year, but I know he will be ready to go when fall rolls around."
Penn finished fourth at this spring's Midwest Collegiate Conference Championships.
