Error will have little room on the William Penn women's golf team as the Lady Statesmen hit the links in 2010-2011.

Despite being one year removed from the program not sponsoring a team due to lack of participation, co-coaches Wade Steinlage and Nik Rule hope not only to produce a competitive squad, but one that will fight for the league championship in the spring.

Dena Stevens (Jr., Oskaloosa, Oskaloosa HS) leads the team after being named an honorable-mention all-MCC pick two years ago. Highlighting her campaign was a school-record round of 76 at the St. Ambrose Classic.

"Dena has all the tools to be one of the best players in the conference," Steinlage said. "We feel very confident with her leading the way as our lone returner."

A trio of newcomers will be asked to step in and immediately post low scores in high-pressure situations.

Courtney Kronmuller (So., Fountain Valley, Calif., Fullerton CC) and Amanda Paceley (Jr., Higley, Ariz., South Mountain CC) compiled solid junior college careers and are expected to hit the ground running this fall.

Aubrey Leasure (Jr., St. Peter, Minn., St. Peter HS) has been away from competitive golf for a couple of years, but has worked hard to get her game back into form.

"The three young ladies that we recruited for this year all come from different backgrounds, but I believe they will help us build a strong foundation for what we plan to accomplish this year and in the future," Steinlage said.

Schedule/Conference

The Lady Statesmen open the year on September 3-4 at Bos Landen Golf Resort in Pella for the Central Fall Invitational. The other five tournaments on the schedule are hosted by MCC foes, so Penn will use plenty of first-hand knowledge of what it will take to be on top when April's league championship rolls around.

Eight-time defending MCC champion St. Ambrose refuses to loosen its grip on the conference's top seat and the rest of the league will likely again be chasing the Queen Bees this year.

"St. Ambrose is always the team to beat, but several teams have made a push recently to take them down," Steinlage said. "Hopefully we are one of those teams that is doing the pushing."

"We took over the women's program late in the spring and unfortunately a little too late to have much success bringing in a large number of players," Steinlage added. "We did however sign three capable student-athletes who have the ability to put us in contention immediately this year. Hopefully years down the road, this group will be able to say that they laid the groundwork for a program that became a national power."
