Oskaloosa--The Lady Statesmen volleyball team will have a small mountain to climb as the Midwest Collegiate Conference's Preseason Coaches Poll was released last Friday.

Penn, who was 23-21 a year ago (2-6 MCC), is fifth in the nine-team league.  The Lady Statesmen, winners of three MCC crowns since joining the league in 2001, are seeking their second title in three years.

Grand View tops the poll with five first-place votes as 2009 MCC Player of the Year Devon Jensen returns. Defending champion St. Ambrose is second with the other two first-place votes.

Viterbo, in third, and Ashford, in fourth, are also ahead of the Lady Statesmen in the preseason rating. Mount Mercy, Clarke, Waldorf, and Iowa Wesleyan round out the standings.

Penn opens the 2010 season this Friday and Saturday by traveling to Cedar Rapids for the Mount Mercy Tournament. On Friday, the Lady Statesmen face Culver-Stockton (Mo.) at 4 p.m. and Grace (Neb.) at 8 p.m. On Saturday, they meet Trinity Christian (Ill.) at 9 a.m. and Cardinal Stritch (Wis.) at 11 a.m.
