Oskaloosa--Tyler Mather (Jr., Des Moines, Iowa Western CC) was just off the mark less than 24 hours earlier, but on Saturday he got both himself and his team on the board as the Statesmen soccer team defeated York (Neb.) 5-2 in non-conference action.

Penn (1-0-1), who outshot the Panthers 19-14, finally scored in 2010 in the 21st minute (20:45) as Mather got past the keeper off a pass from Nick Gorrie (Fr., Kilmarnock, Scotland, Grange Academy).

Gorrie then added another goal just a few minutes later, scoring unassisted at the 23:20 mark.

Antonio Ramirez (Fr., Dallas, Texas, Skyline HS) made it 3-0 at the break, putting home a shot at 41:50 with the assist going to Jordan Hoffman (Fr., Hyde Park, Utah, Skyview HS).

The game was seemingly in control until York (0-1) scored back-to-back goals in the first parts of the second half to cut the deficit to just 3-2.

The Statesmen extended the advantage back to multiple goals on Mather's second goal via Brandon Nicholson (So., Cedar Falls, Cedar Falls HS) in the 65th minute. Mather finished with a game-high six shots.

The Panthers, who played physical all afternoon, committed 16 fouls to just six for Penn, including receiving two yellow cards and two red cards. The first red came in the 69th minute, putting the visitors down one man. The Statesmen immediately capitalized with Chris Bryant (Fr., Lemont, Ill., Lemont HS) scoring unassisted at the 74:23 mark.

Sam Gurski (Fr., Beaumont, Texas, West Brook HS) made his collegiate debut between the pipes and finished with five saves against the two goals allowed.

"The great thing about this win is that all but one of our goals came from freshmen," Statesmen Head Coach Kevin Rushing said. "That shows me we have a strong future ahead of us. We were still without a couple of key players and once they are back, we should be in good shape."

Next: Penn travels to Kansas next weekend for a pair of non-conference games. The Statesmen face Friends in Wichita on Friday at 8 p.m. and then meet up with Ottawa on Saturday in Ottawa at 7 p.m.
