Oskaloosa--After getting off to a rough start, Penn defeated AIB 67-65 in non-conference women's basketball action Tuesday.

The visiting squad led the entire first stanza, holding a 37-23 edge at the break, but Penn fought back after intermission to tie the game at 49-49 with eight minutes left.

Both teams matched each other until the end. The Lady Statesmen pushed the margin to five before the Eagles were able to sneak within two in the final seconds.

Christa Subbert (Sr., Stanton, Stanton HS), who led the team with 20 points (6-of-12 FG), was 3-of-4 from the three-point line and 5-of-6 at the charity stripe. Subbert had a double-double, contributing 11 rebounds with three blocks and four assists on the night.


Penn outshot AIB 40.4%-35.8% and held a 38-35 edge on the boards, led by Subbert's 11.
Orielle Thomas (Fr., Waynesville, Mo., Waynesville HS) added ten rebounds, all on the defensive end.

Samantha Darley (Sr., Gilbert, Ariz., Mesa CC) added 17 points and was followed by Kim Thompson (So., Park Forest, Ill., Upper Iowa) with 11 points.

Four different players had two assists, while Thomas paced the hosts with three steals.

Penn overcame a 19-15 deficit in turnovers by performing much better at the line (18-of-24, while AIB was 22-of-31).

Next: Penn travels to Ashford Saturday to compete in a conference matchup at 1 p.m.
