Oskaloosa--As part of the NAIA's Champions of Character initiative, members of the William Penn football team volunteered their time by reading to elementary students last week.

Several players and coaches trekked over to Oskaloosa Elementary School and visited several classrooms as part of the school's annual Read-A-Thon program. The program is a fundraiser for the Parent Teacher Organization.

During the Read-A-Thon, many community members and parents joined the Statesmen football team to read to different classrooms. The fundraiser went extremely well, raising over $15,000 for the PTO.

"The players and coaches always get great satisfaction attending these functions and spending time with the children that support our program," Assistant Football Coach Aaron Hafner said. "We discussed the importance of reading and then read our favorite book to each class."
