Oskaloosa--William Penn University women's golf coach Nik Rule has announced the signing of Carly Schmalz to a National Letter of Intent to attend the University in the fall of 2013 and compete for the women's golf program.
Carly, the daughter of Dale and Cheryl Schmalz, is a native of Buffalo Lake, Minn. and is currently a junior at Buffalo Lake-Hector HS.
Schmalz, who is in her fifth year at the varsity level, is a three-time Team MVP and qualified for the state tournament in 2010. She will be competing at the Section tournament for the third time in her career after winning medalist honors at the Subsection event with a season-low score of 84.
Schmalz was also the conference champion this spring, earning Conference Player of the Year honors. She was second in the conference as a sophomore and was third as a freshman. Schmalz placed 39th at the state tournament as a freshman.
"Carly is that type of student-athlete that you just want in your program," Rule said. "She believes in the concept of a team, works hard on her game, has a desire to become better, and has an exceptional record in the classroom. I am excited to watch her improve over the next year and cannot wait for her to be wearing navy and gold in the fall of 2013."
William Penn finished the 2011-2012 season with three wins, four runner-up placings, and two other top-five finishes.
