Oskaloosa--The William Penn men's soccer team got the better of Grand View on the road last year, but the squad could not replicate that performance Wednesday in a 3-1 Heart of America Athletic Conference loss.

The Statesmen (4-5-1, 1-3 Heart) had the same number of shots (15) as the 12th-ranked Vikings (7-1-1, 3-0-1 Heart), but the visitors took advantage of their chances.  WPU was seeking to knock off Grand View for the second year in a row after claiming a 1-0 victory in 2015.

GVU scored on two of their first-half tries and added another tally early in the second stanza.  WPU continued to fight, though, and eventually got on the board when Nenad Markovic (So., Belgrade, Serbia) tracked down a loose ball and drilled it into the netting at the 78:16 mark.  Markovic, who tallied a game-best 11 shots (six on goal), now leads his team with eight scores.

Unfortunately, the navy and gold could not get any closer.  Callum Doyle (Fr., Southampton, England, Communications), normally a central defender, was called upon as the team's replacement goalkeeper, and held his own with three saves.

"Even though the result was not what we wanted, this was still a positive performance for us," Head Coach Jaymee Highcock said.  "We can certainly take quite a few good things from this game.  We will learn from this game and move forward."

Next Up: William Penn remains in Oskaloosa Saturday to host #10 Baker in Heart action at 4:30 p.m.
