The Statesmen (4-6-1, 2-3-1 Heart) took the early lead when Graciela Belmontes (Sr., Salinas, Calif., Biology) drove home a pass from Francis Lee (Jr., Fort Dodge, Iowa, Exercise Science) just 5:41 into action.  Belmontes has now scored two goals this year.

WPU continued to dominate play, outshooting the Crusaders (4-6-1, 1-4 Heart) 9-3 in the first half, but could not add to the advantage until the second stanza.

The home squad, which finished with a 14-7 margin in shot attempts, added an insurance goal in the 56th minute.  Camila Parra (Jr., Brisbane, Australia, Exercise Science) centered the ball in front of the goal and Lee finished it off for her third tally of the fall.

The shutout is WPU's third of 2016 and the second in league action.

"We fought well tonight against a good Clarke team and earned a solid win," Head Coach Willie McGowan said.  "We are also delighted that we recorded a shutout; our defense has deserved more of those this season, so it is nice to get one tonight."

"It was great to see us play simply at times," McGowan added.  "Players are playing with more confidence (Gracie's strike) and making runs which we practice (Francis' goal)."
