Grinnell--Both William Penn cross country teams finished fifth out of six squads at the Les Duke Invitational hosted by Grinnell College, Saturday.
The Statesmen tallied 137 points as the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point won the meet with 22 points. The Lady Statesmen finished with 156 points as Carleton (Minn.) won the meet with 26 points.
Travis Sauer (Sr., Salina, Kan., Salina South HS) paced the men as he finished 19th out of 92 competitors at 27:27 on the 8K course. Other top finishers included Demitrius Byrd (So., Detroit, Mich., Denby Tech HS) in 36th at 28:34 and Carl Eaton (Sr., Cleveland, Ohio, Cuyahoga CC) in 42nd at 28:43.
Tyne Crandell (So., Spanish Fork, Utah, Spanish Fork HS) led the women with a 40th-place finish at 26:13 on the 6K course that saw 90 runners in the women's race. Staci Despain (Fr., Hurricane, Utah, Hurricane HS) was next, crossing the finish line in 42nd at 26:17. Kasey Kerr (Fr., Oskaloosa, Oskaloosa HS) finished in 50th at 26:54.
Penn, coached by Richard Speas, will run at the Brissman-Lundeen Invitational, in Davenport, this Friday.
