Valley, Neb.--A team effort guided the Statesmen women's golf team to its best opening round of the year as it competed at the Bellevue Invitational Monday.

#25 WPU placed fourth out of nine teams with a score of 313 at The Pines Country Club--a par-72 layout.  #29 Morningside took the team crown with a 308, while host and #30 Bellevue was second at 309.

Cassidy Evreniadis of Iowa Western CC topped the 51-player field with an even-par 72.

Heavy rain in the area caused the tournament to be cut down to just one round, which is unfortunate for the navy and gold as they have proven through their first few events to be a second-round team.

Just five strokes separated the six Statesmen who hit the links.  Brittany Evans (So., Fernley, Nev., Business Management) paced her team by tying for sixth with a 76.

"Brittany had a solid round for us," Head Coach Chris Pierson said.  "She is the third different person to lead us this fall, which shows our depth."

Megan Rhoads (Jr., Schertz, Texas, Psychology) was next at 78 (14th), while Helene Larsen (Jr., Viborg, Denmark, Business Management) also broke the 80 barrier at 79 to tie for 15th.

Alexis Guimaraes (So., San Ramon, Calif., Psychology), with an 80 to tie for 17th, and Elise Warne (Jr., Melbourne, Australia, Exercise Science), at 81 to tie for 20th, rounded out the varsity scores.

Brooke Fletcher (Sr., Atlantic, Iowa, Business Management) had a strong day as an individual, tying for 10th by carding a 77.

"This was the best first round score we have had all year, which is something we will build upon," Pierson said.  "We have been a second-round team all fall, but unfortunately we could not show that with the rainout.  I definitely believe we are trending in the right direction for the rest of this fall."

Next Up: William Penn returns home next Monday and Tuesday to host the Statesmen Classic.  Play will be contested at Edmundson Golf Course.
