John Henry is in his ninth season as men's basketball coach at Penn this winter.

Henry, who became the head coach seven games into the 2001-02 season, led the 2008-2009 squad to a 22-10 record.  He headed the program to two consecutive national tournament appearances in 2007 and 2008, including winning a school-record 28 games in 2008.

Henry, who currently owns a career record of 148-112 (all at Penn) has guided the Statesmen basketball program to tremendous success on and off the court, producing 43 academic all-MCC selections, 14 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes, 19 all-MCC performers, and six All-Americans.

Henry is a former Statesmen basketball player, graduating from the University in 1997 with a degree in physical education and recreation. After graduation from Penn, Henry coached and taught at the high school level at North Mahaska, Oskaloosa, Clarinda Academy, and Twin Cedars.

After returning to Penn, Henry also served as Penn's head men's and women's cross country coach in 2000 and 2001. He was named MCC Coach of the Year in 2001 for both the men and women after both squads won league titles. The men's team also captured the NAIA Region VII championship in 2001 and competed in the NAIA National Championships.

Originally from Newton, Henry resides in Albia with his wife, Maggie, a 1998 Penn graduate, and their two children, Cole and Ellie.

Joe McKinstry is in his third season as assistant men's basketball coach this winter.

McKinstry returns to Penn after a successful playing career, including being the team's starting point guard three seasons.  He was a major part of the program's reemergence, helping take the team from 2-30 in his freshman year to 20-15 as a senior.  The 20 wins were the most for the program since the 1980-1981 season.

A graduate of the University in 2006 with a degree in physical education with an emphasis in strength and conditioning, McKinstry currently ranks among the top ten in school history in career assists, steals, and three-pointers made.

After completing his athletic eligibility in 2005, McKinstry spent the 2005-2006 season coaching the Statesmen junior varsity squad. He has also worked at numerous basketball camps at Penn, Iowa, Drake, Missouri Western, and Northern Iowa as well as at the high school level.

Keambi Thomas is his second season as assistant men's basketball coach.

Thomas is in his final semester of earning his bachelor's degree in sports administration at Penn. He came to Penn from Indiana Business College where he earned an associate's degree in business administration.

Thomas previously worked as the Sports Coordinator for the Boys and Girls Club in Indianapolis, Ind. and was Assistant Parks Manager for Indianapolis Parks and Recreation for seven years.

During those years, he also coached numerous AAU and youth basketball teams and camps.

Thomas was an extraordinary high school player as he was named Indianapolis Player of the Year in 1993 and scored 1,275 points in his prep career.

A native of Indianapolis, Thomas has a 12-year-old son Hodari.
