Joe McKinstry is in his second season as assistant men's basketball coach this winter.

McKinstry returns to Penn after a successful playing career, including being the team's starting point guard three seasons.  He was a major part of the program's reemergence, helping take the team from 2-30 in his freshman year to 20-15 as a senior.  The 20 wins were the most for the program since the 1980-1981 season.

A graduate of the University in 2006 with a degree in physical education with an emphasis in strength and conditioning, McKinstry currently ranks among the top ten in school history in career assists, steals, and three-pointers made.

After completing his athletic eligibility in 2005, McKinstry spent the 2005-2006 season coaching the Statesmen junior varsity squad. He has also worked at numerous basketball camps at Penn, Iowa, Drake, Missouri Western, and Northern Iowa as well as at the high school level.
