McKinstry returned to William Penn after a successful playing career, including being the team's starting point guard for three seasons. He was a major part of the program's reemergence, helping take the team from 2-30 in his freshman year to 20-15 as a senior. The 20 wins were the most for the program since the 1980-1981 season.
A 2006 graduate with a degree in physical education with an emphasis in strength and conditioning, McKinstry ended his career ranked among the top ten in school history in career assists, steals, and three-pointers made.
After completing his athletic eligibility in 2005, McKinstry spent the 2005-2006 season coaching the Statesmen junior varsity squad. He has also worked at numerous basketball camps at William Penn, Iowa, Drake, Missouri Western, and Northern Iowa as well as at the high school level.
McKinstry has two daughters, Addalyn and Macey.
