Led the Statesmen in tackles two consecutive years. First-team all-NAIA District. First-team all-Iowa Conference. Team MVP.

After Graduation:

Received a walk-on contract with the Cleveland Browns. He chose instead to play in the Midwest Professional League where they not only paid him to play but also guaranteed him a job. Houghtling played two seasons.
