WPU Swept by Defending Champion Vikings
Oskaloosa--The Statesmen Esports team met up with the defending Heart of America Athletic Conference champions, but could not pull off the upset in a 3-0 loss to Missouri Valley Tuesday.
The night began on an ominous note for William Penn (1-2) as it dropped the opening game 6-0. Unfortunately, the squad could not keep pace with MVC which held an 18-1 edge in shots on goal. Martin Contreras (Fr., Hinsdale, Ill., Sports Management) managed five of the 10 navy and gold saves.
A more-composed WPU crew showed up in the final two games, but the outcome was the same as the Statesmen fell 4-0 in the second round and also 4-0 in the third game.
William Penn managed three shots in the second game with two coming from Aiden Gibbons (Fr., Apollo Beach, Fla., Sports Management). The freshman also finished with four saves; overall, the Statesmen had seven stops.
WPU recorded four shots on goal in the evening finale, while on the defensive end, Gibbons led his team with four saves. Contreras and Thando Morebudi (Sr., Pretoria, South Africa, Applied Computer Science) both saved two attempts as well.
"This was a tough game for us against a good, disciplined MVC team," Head Coach Austin Fagen-Scholes said. "We were dropped right into the fire to start the season with two strong teams in back-to-back games. I look forward to seeing how we compete on Thursday. We will bounce back."
