William Penn Sweeps Baker for Second Win in a Row
Oskaloosa--The Statesmen Esports team kept its momentum going Thursday as it took down Baker 3-0 in Heart of America Athletic Conference Rocket League play.
WPU (3-2), winners of two straight matches, dominated throughout, beginning with a 6-0 shutout of the Wildcats in the opening game. The navy and gold tallied 14 total shots with Aiden Gibbons (Fr., Apollo Beach, Fla., Sports Management) putting three attempts past the BU defense.
Vann Bohling (So., Leander, Texas, Business Management) was good for two scores, while Thando Morebudi (Sr., Pretoria, South Africa, Applied Computer Science) tallied one goal as well. Gibbons and Morebudi also assisted on a pair of scores.
With his crew on the offensive end most of the game, Morebudi recorded WPU's lone save as Baker produced just one attempt.
The squad's 5-0 win in the second round featured the Statesmen fighting off an improved Wildcat attack that managed seven shots, but the victors still kept Baker off the board.
Gibbons and Morebudi put two shots in the netting, while Martin Contreras (Fr., Hinsdale, Ill., Sports Management) also scored. Contreras assisted three times as well in the second shutout of the night.
WPU closed out the sweep with a blowout 9-0 victory in the third game. Gibbons and Bohling paced the offense with four goals apiece, while Contreras factored into the scoring as well. Contreras was the team's best distributor with three assists.
"This was a dominant shutout from our guys," Head Coach Austin Fagen-Scholes said. "We came prepared and are ramping up for our most important match of the season next Thursday versus St. Ambrose. We have some more work to do, but I love what I saw tonight. We are going to come ready."
