Football Game Notes: Week Seven: Iowa Wesleyan
Oskaloosa--The Penn football team seeks to extend its winning streak over Iowa Wesleyan to double digits as the two programs meet Saturday for Penn's Homecoming.
The Statesmen (3-3, 1-1 MWL) host the Tigers (2-4, 1-2 MWL) at 1:30 p.m. in Oskaloosa Community Stadium.

Mahaska Communication Group (MCG) will also provide television coverage for all home games on its cable network.
HOMECOMING SUCCESS: Penn has won five Homecoming games in a row, outscoring opponents 163-102 during that span.
At last year's Homecoming, the Statesmen upset then #20 St. Francis (Ill.) 33-27.
Series History: Penn leads the gridiron series against Iowa Wesleyan 34-23-6 and has dominated in recent years with nine straight wins, dating back to 1988.
The Statesmen won last year's contest 35-13, tallying all 397 of their yards on the ground. Ryan Van Dalen (Sr., Oskaloosa, Oskaloosa HS) rushed 18 times for 206 yards and three scores.
Coaches: Todd Hafner is in his sixth year as head football coach at Penn, entering the campaign with a 26-29 career record.
Hafner led his 2008 squad to a 7-4 record, including a 5-2 Midwest League mark. The seven wins are the most for the program since 1976. For his efforts, Hafner was named Midwest League Coach of the Year
He also guided Penn to the program's first winning season in 29 years in 2005 when the team was 6-5. Over his four years, Hafner has produced 58 all-conference players and eight All-Americans.
Hafner graduated from Pittsburg State University in 1994 with a degree in mathematics (minor in coaching).
Hafner started his coaching career at Carl Junction HS in Carl Junction, Mo., where he was an assistant football coach for two years. From there he moved on to Southwest Baptist where he was a graduate assistant for one year.
Hafner then returned to Carl Junction to take up the head coaching position. He held it for four years before taking an assistant coaching job at Emporia State in Emporia, Kan. Hafner was the offensive coordinator for two years before adding assistant head coach to his title.
Jason Smelser is in his fourth year as head football coach at Iowa Wesleyan, entering the campaign with a 4-28 record.
He became head coach after serving one year as defensive coordinator/head assistant coach in 2005. His teams have been very strong defensively, ranking twice in the top 20 in the NAIA in pass defense.
Smelser earned his bachelor's degree from Southern Arkansas in 2000 and his master's degree in education in 2001. He served on the Southern Arkansas coaching staff from the spring of 1999 to the fall of 2004.
The STATESMEN LAST Week: Penn was victimized by itself in falling 24-17 to Grand View last Saturday.
The Statesmen, who committed four turnovers to just one by the Vikings, were in prime position to win the game with a late field goal, but the kick was blocked and returned for the winning score.
Van Dalen rushed for 134 yards and passed for another 129, while Skyler Crouch (Sr., Payson, Utah, Payson HS) hauled in four passes for 77 yards and a touchdown.
Javaras Thomas (Jr., Miami, Fla., Miami Beach HS) blocked two punts to earn Midwest League Special Teams Player of the Week honors.
IOWA WESLEYAN LAST Week: The Tigers scored 26 unanswered points in the first half to drop Waldorf 26-14 last Saturday.
Jaren Maybin ran all over the Warriors with 15 rushes for 215 yards and three scores, while Kevin McConnell also surpassed the century mark rushing with 109 yards. Gerald Knighten returned a punt 55 yards for a touchdown as well.
The Statesmen A Year Ago This Week: Penn pulled off one of the biggest upsets in school history by defeating #20 St. Francis (Ill.) 33-27 on Homecoming in Week Seven of 2008.
Both teams put up big offensive numbers, combining for 805 total yards, in a game that seesawed with five lead changes and one tie.
Penn had the final say in the matter, however, when Van Dalen crossed the goal line for the second time on the day in the final two minutes of action. The Statesmen defense then intercepted a pass deep in its own territory to preserve the win.
Crouch had a huge game with six receptions for 137 yards and a score and one rush for a 68-yard touchdown.
IOWA WESLEYAN A Year Ago This Week: The Tigers rallied for two touchdowns in the final six minutes of regulation, but it was not enough in a 35-28 loss to Quincy (Ill.) in Week Seven of 2008.
Following the two touchdowns, Iowa Wesleyan was unable to recover the onside kick and the Hawks ran out the clock. The Tiger offense was extremely proficient with 517 yards, but that did not translate into a victory.
Bryan Abihider aired it out for 318 yards and two scores as Lawrence Moore was his top target with 11 catches for 188 yards.
Statesmen Top Offensive Players: Van Dalen continues to be the spark in the Penn offense thus far in 2009.
The senior leads the ground attack with 100 rushes for 498 yards (5.0 avg.) and seven TDs, while four other players have also amassed over 100 yards rushing.
Van Dalen has also completed 32-of-78 passes for 762 yards and seven scores. Crouch, with 16 receptions for 440 yards and five scores, and Bernard Luster (Jr., Corinth, Miss., Northwest Mississippi CC), with six catches for 165 yards and two scores, have been a nice 1-2 punch in the receiving corps.
IOWA WESLEYAN Top Offensive Players: Maybin is pacing the Tiger offense with 522 rushing yards and six scores.
McConnell has been the team's most consistent quarterback, completing 47-of-78 passes for 327 yards.
Moore tops the receiving corps with 33 receptions for 208 yards and one touchdown.
Statesmen Top Defensive Players: Trevon Greene (Sr., Gaffney, S.C., Gaffney HS) leads Penn with 38 tackles, while Kris Austin (Sr., Oxford, Miss., Lafayette HS) is next with 35 stops. Dale Woods (Jr., Southaven, Miss., Northwest Mississippi CC) leads the team with 16 tackles for loss, five sacks, and two forced fumbles.
Cody Hackett (Sr., State Center, West Marshall HS) and Dominic Peace (Fr., Pensacola, Fla., J.R. Arnold HS) both have a squad-best three interceptions.
IOWA WESLEYAN Top Defensive Players: Darious Watson tops the Tigers with 46 tackles, while Scott Baldwin has four tackles for loss. Jean Louis has a team-high two sacks.
Three Iowa Wesleyan players have one interception each this fall.
Statesmen Top Special Teams Players: Cam Shearon (So., St. Peters, Mo., Francis Howell Central HS) is 3-8 in field goals and 15-17 in extra points.
Penn is utilizing two individuals in the punt game. Hackett has punted 14 times for a 37.7 yard average, while Michael Harris (Sr., Panora, Iowa Central CC) has punted 15 times for a 34.3 yard average.
Harris leads the team in return average with an 19.6 yard kickoff average (23 attempts) and an 18.6 yard punt average (five attempts). He has returned one punt for a touchdown.
IOWA WESLEYAN Top Special Teams Players: Baldwin (0-1 FG, 2-4 XP) and Josh Feliciano (2-3 FG, 3-3 XP) have shared the kicking responsibilities.
They have also both punted several times with Feliciano averaging 32.6 yards over 27 attempts, while Baldwin is averaging 32.2 yards over 13 tries.
Maybin is also the team's leading kickoff returner with an 18.5 yard average over 11 attempts, while Knighten has returned three punts for an average of 22.0 yards.
