Penn Men Fourth at League Championships
Ankeny--Steady, consistent play by the team's five varsity players led the Statesmen golf team to a top-half finish as Penn competed at the Midwest Collegiate Conference Championships Friday and Saturday.
The Statesmen placed fourth out of eight teams with a two-day, 54-hole tally of 917 (306-304-307) at Otter Creek Golf Course, a par-70, 6,895-yard course.
Grand View, ranked #14 in the NAIA, claimed its first-ever league crown in men's golf with a score of 859 (292-281-286), holding off #23 St. Ambrose by nine strokes (868--292-289-287).
With the tournament title, the Vikings receive the automatic berth and will represent the MCC at the 59th Annual NAIA Golf National Championships in Silvis, Ill. on May 18-21. The competition, which is held at TPC at Deere Run, will be hosted by St. Ambrose, who earns the league's second berth as the host team.
Josh Manske of Grand View won medalist honors with a four-under score of 206 (69-67-70).
Penn's top-half finish is the first for the program at the conference tournament since placing fourth out of nine teams at the 2008 championships (the tournament did not count as the national qualifier back then). The team will be expecting to continue to move up the ladder in the coming years as four of the five varsity members were freshmen and the other was a sophomore.
The squad's five players were separated by just seven shots as Seb Stobart (So., Harare, Zimbabwe, St. Georges College) topped the team by carding a 229 (78-75-76) to tie for 16th out of 40 players.
Geoff Dammann (Fr., Wyoming, Midland HS) was just one stroke behind Stobart in 18th place with a score of 230 (76-77-77), while Mattias Carlsson (Fr., Uddevalla, Sweden, Agnebergskolan HS) was one stroke behind Dammann in 19th with a score of 231 (75-81-75).
Adriaan de Villiers (Fr., Akasia, South Africa, Akasia HS) tied for 21st at 233 (78-76-79) and Brent Lurie (Fr., Johannesburg, South Africa, Beaulieu College) was 25th overall at 236 (77-76-83).
