Statesmen Take Third in Season Opener

Oskaloosa--The William Penn men's golf team used a little home-course advantage to secure a third-place finish as it hosted the William Penn Statesmen Invitational Monday and Tuesday.

WPU placed third out of seven teams with a two-day score of 597 (298-299) at the par-70 Edmundson Golf Course.  Hawkeye CC and NCAA Division II Lincoln (Mo.) tied for first at 586, but Hawkeye CC took the crown in a tiebreaking playoff between the two teams' #1 players.

Henry Mwanza of Lincoln topped the 45-player field at 142 (68-74).

The duo of Andon Herrera (So., Katy, Texas, Business Management) and Tyler Pedretti (Fr., Upland, Calif., Business Management) guided the Statesmen as they earned all-tournament honors with third and fourth-place finishes, respectively.  Herrera posted scores of 70 and 75, while Pedretti went 72-74.

Luke Galeazzi (Sr., Knoxville, Iowa, Business Management) was next in a tie for 10th at 149 (76-73), while Francois Assaud (Sr., Montelimar, France, Sports Management) was 13th at 151 (75-76).  Clay Morse (So., Sigourney, Iowa, Business Management) concluded the varsity lineup's scoring in 16th at 153 (77-76).

William Penn also put its reserve players on the links with Nicholas Moore (So., Hurst, Texas, Business Management) leading that grouping in a tie for 10th at 149 (74-75).  The reserve squad finished fourth in the standings at 607 (300-307).

"This was a good test for our guys against some very good competition," Head Coach Elise Warne said.  "There were many individual highlights, including Andon Herrera continuing his form after a solid first year.  Tyler Pedretti showed his talent in the first tournament of his career.  The team is showing some depth right now which is exactly what we want to see.  There is a lot of golf to be played yet this season and there is some serious potential in this squad."

Next Up: William Penn travels to McPherson, Kan. next Monday and Tuesday to compete in the Central Kansas Classic.  Play will be contested at Turkey Creek Golf Course.
