WPU Heading to Florida with Hopes for National Success

Oskaloosa--A handful of talented Statesmen will take on the nation's best as they compete at the U.S. Marines NAIA Men's Indoor Track and Field National Championship Thursday through Saturday.

The 60th annual event, which is hosted by the Gainesville Sports Commission, will be held in Gainesville, Fla. at the Alachua County Sports and Events Center.

William Penn has qualified in four individual events and one relay race.

Anthony Weaver (So., Demopolis, Ala., Mechanical Engineering) and Micah Mills (So., Houston, Texas, Psychology) will get the navy and gold started as they compete in Thursday's triple jump at 3:30 p.m. (Central).  Weaver enters as the eighth-ranked jumper in the field at 48-7.25, while Mills is 18th at 47-5.

WPU's distance medley relay squad consisting of D'Artagnon Beaver (Sr., Rockford, Ill., Human Services), Andrew Miller (So., Le Claire, Iowa, Exercise Science), Brandon Williams (Sr., Fountain, Colo., Engineering Technology), and Bennett Polite (Jr., Kearney, Mo., Fine Arts) will then take to the track for the preliminary round just over an hour later (4:45 p.m.) on Thursday.  The crew ranks 24th in the Championship grouping with a qualifying time of 10:11.35.

Beaver returns to the oval Friday at 11:05 a.m. for the one-mile run prelims.  The senior sits 17th in the field at 4:13.99.

Showalter Johnson (Sr., Nassau, Bahamas, New Media) and Xzavion West (Jr., Guthrie, Ky., Undecided) will then both compete in separate events on Friday at 2 p.m.  Johnson is 25th heading into the 60-meter dash prelims (6.80 seconds), while West is 18th in the weight throw at 57-8.5.
