Beaver, West with Weekly Heart Hardware

Oskaloosa--The Statesmen men's track and field team swept league recognition Monday as the Heart of America Athletic Conference Men's Track and Field Athlete of the Week awards were announced, presented by WinWon.

D'Artagnon Beaver (Sr., Rockford, Ill., Human Services) claimed the Track honor, while Xzavion West (Jr., Guthrie, Ky., Undecided) won the Field accolade.  The award is the third in Beaver's track career (five more in cross country), while West is now a first-time weekly winner.

At the Drake Jim Duncan Invitational last Friday, Beaver broke his own 3,000-meter steeplechase school record with a time of 9:10:35.  His time also eclipsed the NAIA's automatic national-qualifying standard.

He currently leads the Heart in that event, while also sitting 11th in the league in the 5,000-meter run (15:42.07).

West won the hammer throw competition at the Grinnell Dick Young Invitational last Saturday, improving on his provisional standard with a throw of 186-4.  He was fourth in the shot put at 50-9.5 and 11th in the discus at 134-6 as well.

The junior currently ranks first in the hammer and fourth in the shot put with the numbers above, while being 11th in the discus at 138-11.

The awards are the first two for William Penn during the outdoor campaign, while the program now has six for the entire year.
