Statesmen Open Final Homestand with Losses to GVU

Oskaloosa--The William Penn softball team could not overcome untimely errors as it was swept by Grand View in a Heart of America Athletic Conference doubleheader Sunday.

WPU (15-27, 7-13 Heart) lost by scores of 4-2 and 5-1.  It is the start of six-straight home games for the navy and gold.

Chelsey Huff (So., Douds, Iowa, Exercise Science), who struck out 10 in the day's first game, easily pitched well enough to claim the victory.  Unfortunately, the hosts committed an error in both the third and fifth frames, which opened the door for the Vikings (28-14, 14-8 Heart) and the visitors took advantage.

GVU scored three times in the third and once more in the fifth with all of its runs coming unearned against Huff.

Down 4-0 entering the bottom of the fifth, William Penn mounted a comeback.  Zoey Jones (Jr., Ottumwa, Iowa, Elementary Education) reached on a leadoff error, while Abby Wilson (Sr., Calgary, Alberta, Biology) followed with a single.  Allyson Stewart (Sr., Delta, B.C., Nursing) then drove in Jones with a double, while Wilson came around two batters later on a Huff sacrifice fly.

With runners on first and third and just one out, the frame unfortunately ended abruptly, though, as the Statesmen were ruled for interference and the second the third outs were recorded on the same play.

WPU was unable to do much at the plate over the final two innings and dropped the first bout.  The squad was outhit just 8-7 with Wilson and Stewart each tallying two base knocks.

The Vikings once again staked themselves to a sizable advantage in the nightcap as the navy and gold committed four fielding mistakes.  Grand View scored once in the third inning and four more times in the fifth.

Nayely Martinez (Jr., Carson, Calif., Business Management) got on base via a Viking error and was pinch-ran for by Bailee Rinn (Fr., Omaha, Neb., Biology).  The freshman eventually tallied her team's lone run by sprinting home on a wild pitch.  The Statesmen lost the hits battle 6-1.

Valeria Quiroga (Sr., Brownsville, Texas, Sociology) had the lone hit, while also walking twice.
