Another One! Statesmen Drop Knights at Wartburg Invite

Cedar Falls--The William Penn shotgun sports team posted a school record as it took down another foe at the Wartburg Invitational Saturday and Sunday.

In what turned out to be a dual, WPU outpaced Wartburg with a tally of 1,836-1,766.  Coe also competed in Sunday's portion.

The navy and gold earned first in all four disciplines, beginning with a score of 493-for-500 in Trap.

Raylee Bishop (Jr., Ankeny, Iowa, Engineering) led the scoring with a perfect effort of 100-for-100.  Morgan Hodge (Fr., West Liberty, Iowa, Nursing) was next with a 99-for-100 performance, while the quartet of Mathew Brindley (Jr., Earlham, Iowa, Industrial Technology), Dryden DeKoning (Jr., Newton, Iowa, Business Management), Colton Heintz-Kuderer (Fr., Mabel, Minn., Biology), and Cole Henning (Fr., Wilton, Iowa, Industrial Technology) all posted scores of 98-for-100.

In Double Trap, the Statesmen tallied a score of 466-for-500 with Henning and Colten Uitermarkt (Grad., Otley, Iowa, Master's of Organizational Leadership) each at 97-for-100.  Bishop's 92-for-100 also scored for WPU, as did the 90-for-100 tallies by both Bryon Baca (Grad., Colorado Springs, Colo., Master's of Organizational Leadership) and Kade Dunkin (Jr., Hamilton, Iowa, Biology).

The Skeet competition provided the Statesmen another opportunity to flex their muscles, and they did so in a record-breaking way with a school-record score of 497-for-500.

Uitermarkt and Tanner Muff (So., Lincoln, Neb., General Accounting) topped WPU with perfect 100-for-100 scores, while the squad's incredible depth was on display as 12 different Statesmen missed just once.  The 99-for-100 list included Baca, Brindley, DeKoning, Heintz-Kuderer, Bishop, Russell Malterud (Grad., North Branch, Minn., Master's of Organizational Leadership), Lane Arrowood (Jr., Newton, Iowa, Biology), Noah DeBoef (Jr., Leighton, Iowa, Industrial Technology), Cade Bowie (So., Benton, Ark., Business Management), Brandon Nord (So., Hidden Valley Lake, Calif., New Media), Adison Sholes (Jr., Indianola, Iowa, Business Management), and Emily Uitermarkt (Jr., Otley, Iowa, Elementary Education).

William Penn finished off the Knights by posting a score of 480-for-500 in Sporting Clays.  DeBoef was the team leader at 78-for-100, while Brindley was second at 77-for-100.  Hunter Block (Sr., Eldridge, Iowa, Business Management), at 76-for-100, Connor Gittings (Jr., Kansas City, Mo., Biology), at 75-for-100, and the duo of Baca and Malterud, at 74-for-100 each, wrapped up the team scoring.

Uitermarkt was first among all shooters at 365-for-400 for the High Overall Athlete award, while Bishop won the Female HOA accolade with a tally of 354-for-100.

"Our athletes continues to push each other and focus on the targets as their competition, instead of worrying about the other individuals or teams they are competing against," Head Coach Steve Heaton said.  "We had some tougher weather conditions to fight through, but they all held it together and came out with some great scores."

Next Up: William Penn concludes the fall campaign Saturday and Sunday by traveling to Waukee to compete in the Iowa Four-Year State Shoot.
