William Penn Advances to Semifinals at Mid States

Wichita, Kan.--The Statesmen women's bowling team secured a top-five finish at the Mid States Championship last Saturday and Sunday.

WPU placed fifth out of 26 teams with 8,303 pins in six regular games and 16 Baker games.  Wichita State (Kan.) paced qualifying with 8,673 pins to claim the top spot in the bracket competition.

The Statesmen qualified for bracket play as the #5 seed and moved through the quarterfinals by knocking off #4 Newman (Kan.) 3-2 (211-244, 216-155, 171-174, 173-160, 195-159).  Unfortunately, the navy and gold could not overcome the top-seeded Shockers, falling in five sets (233-232, 158-204, 171-230, 246-190, 146-189).

Wichita State eventually won bracket play by defeating #3 seed Sam Houston State (Texas) 3-1 in the finals.

Grace Bringham of SCAD Savannah (Ga.) paced the qualifying field with a 206.7 average (1,240 pins).

Sammantha Meyers (Sr., Rockford, Ill., Elementary Education) set the pace for the Statesmen, earning 18th place with a 188.5 average over six games.

Caitlin Radliff (Sr., Belleville, Ill., Software Engineering) was extremely strong through five rounds, averaging 215.4 pins. Olivia Pilcher (Jr., Ottumwa, Iowa, Exercise Science) averaged 170.2 pins over the span of six games.

Kelcey Aczon
(Jr., Las Vegas, Nev., Nursing) (163.3) and Olivia Nolte (Sr., Atkins, Iowa, Elementary Education) (174.8) both started four times.

Danielle Fincham (So., Surprise, Ariz., Exercise Science), with an average of 182.3, started in three games, while Lucy Mitchell (So., Poulsbo, Wash., Psychology) knocked down an average of 160.5 pins in two rounds.

"The girls bowled well this weekend. They kept their energy up, communicated with each other, and worked hard through the tougher lanes," said Head Coach Kirstin Foster. "They fought hard and didn't let their opponents affect them. Still, we have some things that we are working on to improve more and help create more tournaments like this."

Next Up: William Penn takes a couple weeks off before returning to action with a trip to Rockford, Ill. on Saturday and Sunday, November 9-10 to compete in the ISYL Leatherneck Classic.
