Lange Snaps 54-Hole Record at Susie Maxwell Berning Event
Oklahoma City, Okla.--Headlined by a new 54-hole school record from Olivia Lange (Jr., Buckeburg, Germany, Business Management), the William Penn women's golf team took the silver at the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic hosted by Oklahoma City Monday and Tuesday.
William Penn placed second out of nine teams with a three-round score of 912 (304-307-301) at the par-72 Link Park (West) Golf Course. #3 Oklahoma City won the team crown with ease at 844 (282-278-284).
Maddi Kamas of Oklahoma City crushed the 56-player field at 14-under par 202 (67-67-68), winning by 11 strokes.
Although she was a distant third, Lange made major news by shooting a two-under 214 to obliterate the program's previous 54-hole record of 219, of which she already owned from last fall. The junior opened competition with a one-under 71. She then carded a 73 before finishing with a two-under 70. Her week included 14 birdies and 29 pars, while she also placed in the top 10 in par-3 (+3), par-4 (-4), and par-5 (-1) scoring.
"Olivia Lange was outstanding, becoming the first player in school history to finish under par over 54 holes," Head Coach Elise Warne said. "She played with such confidence. It was so fun to watch her perform."
Carlee Frayne (Sr., Garner, Iowa, Sport Management) recorded a top-10 finish as well, placing 10th at 226 (75-75-76). Gabriana Franco (So., Tracy, Calif., Exercise Science) was next in 14th at 234 (76-83-75).
"Carlee Frayne was super solid for us," Warne said. "She had more in the tank, but I am very pleased with her consistency and composure. Gabriana Franco had a great comeback in the third round. She is finally finding her footing after dealing with a few illnesses, so I expect her to continue to improve these next few weeks."
Olivia Cramer (Jr., Lawton, Mich., Civil Engineering) tied for 19th at 238 (82-76-80), while Riley Burns (Jr., Edwardsville, Ill., Elementary Education) concluded the varsity scoring at 262 (89-85-88) to tie for 38th.
Emma Lawson (Jr., Rossville, Ind., Exercise Science), competing as an individual, produced a top-20 effort in 18th at 237 (79-76-82).
"Emma Lawson had an incredible week as our individual," Warne said. "She is reaping the rewards of the hard work she has put in the last two years. Olivia Cramer was also solid for us and contributed to our team total."
"This was an overall great week for our ladies," Warne added. "We took advantage of the course and pushed the scores. It felt like we took a big step in our development and continued the momentum we have been building all spring. We took a lot from playing with the #3 team in the nation. We are excited to continue our momentum next week at home before going to the conference tournament."
Next Up: William Penn returns to Oskaloosa next Monday and Tuesday to host the Statesmen Invitational. Play will be contested at Edmundson Golf Course.
