WPU Notches Third Win of Spring
Oskaloosa--The Statesmen women's golf team dominated on its home soil as it won the weather-shortened Statesmen Invitational Monday and Tuesday.
In a tournament cut down by weather to just 27 holes, WPU finished first out of four squads with a score of 455 (307-148) at the par-70 Edmundson Golf Course.
Olivia Lange (Jr., Buckeburg, Germany, Business Management) claimed the individual title, topping the 27-player field at 109 (75-34). The crown is her second of the campaign.
The junior was five strokes ahead of the next-closest competitor, which happened to be teammate Carlee Frayne (Sr., Garner, Iowa, Sport Management). Frayne, who led the standings after the first 18 holes, won the silver at 114 (73-41).
The navy and gold captured the top five spots with Emma Lawson (Jr., Rossville, Ind., Exercise Science) up next in third at 117 (83-34).
Olivia Cramer (Jr., Lawton, Mich., Civil Engineering) was fourth at 119 (80-39), while Gabriana Franco (So., Tracy, Calif., Exercise Science) wrapped up the varsity scoring in fifth at 120 (79-41).
William Penn's reserve players were also in action at the Invitational with the 'B' team placing second at 520 (346-174).
Riley Burns (Jr., Edwardsville, Ill., Elementary Education), at 83-43, and Bliss Martin (So., Hamilton, Ill., Biology), at 84-42, guided the reserve linksters as they tied for eighth at 126.
"This was a great finish to the spring season," Head Coach Elise Warne said. "I was really pleased with many of the performances and happy to get the win at home. Although the tournament was shortened, we were still able to send our lone senior Carlee Frayne off on a high. She had the low round from Monday and has proven how important she is in our lineup with her steadiness."
"Olivia Lange also had a great tournament, sneaking the win from her teammate," Warne added. "Having our ladies take all of the top five spots was a great exclamation point on the regular season. We have a quick turnaround for conference next week and we cannot wait."
Next Up: William Penn travels to Moravia next Monday and Tuesday to compete in the Heart of America Athletic Conference Championship. Play will be contested at The Preserve Golf Course.
